Interviews.
I have been questioning my interview style.
I have been learning the do's and don't's, but i think for my next films, i'm going to look into reading some writings on good interviewing techniques.
Now i can at least see my interview style, just needing to refine it.
Anybody that has suggested reading material please let me know.

progress report
I think i will share my progress on the films as well here.
I am now starting on the mind map for "The True Masculine" It has come together very quickly.
Even titles for sections are coming to me while mind mapping. I have my last interview coming up in December then in January i will knuckle down and get that finished during January.
I am yet to finalise the DF as there is one more interview taking place in a week or so. So then i shall begin the sliming process as at the moment it is 94 minutes, which i think is too long for this type of documentary.
Film making is like gardening. If one keeps chipping away then final thing slowly reveals itself overtime.

Now begins the fun stuff....
Today is a day of fun for me as a film maker. I feel i've really come to a point in the editing where i have all the bits that i want in it. Now starts the reduction process. One must be devoid of any emotional attachment at this stage. as i unwraps a brand new razor blade to finish the deed. Ruthlessly trimming away the duplicates, the floatsam and a tad of jetsum, it stands at an hour and a half long, this is without narrative opener and closer etc. My goal length is one hour.
What will hit the cutting room floor?
Anyway today is the day to start titles and graphics for this project.
I'd like to hear what you think.....

In the flow.
Why is it when one is in the flow it all seems so simple?
Why is there resistance to being in the flow in the first place?
I love making movies, especially when it comes together so easily.
I really love making movies.
Maybe when it is easy the mind thinks it should be hard.
Is this a metaphor for life too?

two steps forward one step back.
I've started to assemble all the parts of my project. Lets call them chapters.
It's funny but i think i'm making progress. Then I realise how much more work i have to go....
Oh well, keep chipping away.

essential tools for high concept doco film making
Boy it is tough trying to think of everything when doing a film about concepts.
So i heard about mind maps and there is alot of software out there, some quite expensive.
Not only that they can be really confusing , and i mean too many options.
But i decided to look at the open source version and came across a couple.

this one is okay but the graphics look like they are from the early ninties.

This one rocks for me. It's intuitive. I give it teh big thumbs up.
I have a mind map of my film in less than half and hour!!!

doco construction set.
It has been suggested that i journel my documentary making process so i can remember what to do next time. During the course of making my first film I learn't a lot, and now i am working on the next two films the things i am learning and remembering may just come in handy. I will keep adding to this as i realise stuff,
- Eliminate ALL distractions!
- You control the interview, not the interviewee.
- Have a clear list of questions
- Listen to your interview - whilst recording and of course during the editing process. i.e. - at start of edit. Half way into the edit and then one last listen to make sure nothing is missing.
- Put some music behind the edit, even if it's not the final music it will show you some sense of flow. (This helps to give you a feeling of achievement cause it starts to look and feel like a film)
- look at the questions for common threads. Why am I asking this question? If I was to group theses questions together what would they be saying overall.
